International trademark registration through the Madrid Protocol.
Extend your trademark protection to other countries based on your Brazilian application or registration, with a single international filing and dedicated monitoring across each designated country.
One application, multiple countries.
The Madrid Protocol is an international treaty administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Brazil joined the system in 2019.
With it, a business files a single international application through the INPI and designates the target countries for protection. Each designated country examines the application under domestic law and decides whether to grant registration.
During the first five years, the international registration depends on the basic Brazilian application or registration. If the home mark is denied or cancelled within this period, the international protection is affected to the same extent.
When it is worth it.
Selling to other countries
Cross-border e-commerce, direct exports, or distributors outside Brazil.
Planned international expansion
Opening branches, franchises, or joint ventures in overseas markets.
Foreign investment rounds
Fundraising rounds, M&A deals, or licensing where IP ownership abroad is evaluated.
Preventive protection
Preventing third parties or bad-faith actors from registering your brand in target markets first.
In certain cases, direct national filing in a specific country is preferable—such as when a country is not part of the Madrid System or when the mark requires distinct specifications. We recommend the optimal route for each target market.
